First Worm with a EULA?

This only hurts windows users, but it's a novel, and despicable, new form of sleezeware. Do not open or install software from Friend Greetings.

I.B.M. Builds Circuit with Carbon Monoxide Molecules

Sweet! Nanotech circuits are almost here. CO2 = switch on a copper plate. By “almost”, of course, I mean 20 years away.

Implantable Chip, On Sale Now

This is some seriously scary shit. In addition to the elimination of your privacy, if you somehow want the chip, you have to friggin pay $10/month for the privilege of being in the company's database. Funk dat. Die die die, panoptic scum!

IBM's "Blue Gene" to run on Linux

IBM's “Blue Gene” to run on Linux

The future is massively parallel computing… and it looks like linux is going to be a part of it. I'm almost willing to lay money down that Intel's going to be SoL on this parallel front as well. They keep going bigger, hotter, more energy requirements. When what is really needed is more efficient, less energy, less heat. Transmeta, anyone?

What Bush Isn't Saying About Iraq

What Bush Isn't Saying About Iraq

“oil” and “Israel.” In any honest appraisal of the war, the true underpinnings need to be discussed. I agree with Kinsley on the ex post facto justifications being the predominant “wisdom” of today.

Lizzie Grubman begins 60 day sentence

Can you believe this woman is getting only 60 days?! She backed over a crowd, injuring 16 people, and fled the scene with the help of an accomplice. She's always been regarded as a nasty piece of work who only has anything because daddy has money. Yeah, her parents raised a winner. That's only 3 days per injury caused!

To think, some people believe we live in a class-distinction free society.

MS' response? You shouldn't say these things publicly because now people are more likely to be attacked, and it causes panic. Putzes.

Nicole Kidman: Stepford wife

Oh, she's portraying one, not admitting she is one. She's perfect for the role: humorless porcelain of marginal talent and as fake as a cannibal at a farmer's market.

Patent holder, granted ridiculous patent, is extorting small companies nationwide

If this doesn't call for censure of the PanIP skeeves (who are using obviously shady tactics to pursue their claims) and an overhaul of the retarded, overly-permissive patent process, I don't know what will.

I'm betting prior art's gonna save the day here.

ID Chip's Controversial Approval

ID Chip's Controversial Approval

From the “Not in my lifetime unless you've got a court order” files… so, the FDAs OK'ing the use of implantable chips in humans, provided it's only used for “security, financial and personal identification or safety applications.” Security? SECURITY?! Jesus. Am I the only one who gets shivvers just thinking about the implications of this.

I'm sure the decision has nothing to do with the current administration, DoJ, “war on terrorism,” the “USA PATRIOT” act, or any other sort of fear mongering. Nope. Not at all.

Washington State Congressman attempts to outlaw GPL

Washington State Congressman attempts to outlaw GPL

OK, so it's a misleading title, but a) gee, why am I not surprised it's a puke from WA sponsoring this bill, and b) since there is no copyright in gov't work, and since gov't work is largely funded by our tax dollars I think the public has an interest in the outcome.

Here's a synopsis of the argument:

  • They state that you cannot improve OR adopt OR commercialize GPL software;
  • They state that you cannot integrate GPL'd software with proprietery software.
  • They say you should keep publicly funded code away from the public sector, so that proprietary interests can make money from the work. (this is the worst basis here. Take lobbyist lunches, much?)
  • Is there no end to corporate evil and disinformation?

Limestone casket may be oldest link to Jesus

Limestone casket may be oldest link to Jesus

Again with the “historical records”. News flash: this proves nothing. Jesus never existed. He is a myth. A fable. An object lesson on the value of forgiveness and nonviolence. Legions of the equivalent of today's historians, journalists, and sociologists were present in Jerusalem (and surrounding areas) at the supposed time of the Jesus uprising. Want to know how many referenced him? Zero. You'd think that some rabble rouser with a large cult following would be mentioned somewhere, no?

It doesn't make Jesus any less powerful of a motivating figure to be a creation of the church, but please, how many times are we going to have to go through the X proves existence of the whitey-with-blue-eyes-and-straight-hair Jesus? OK, the whitey part is irrelevant here, but you know what I mean. Why try so hard to “prove” something, when the impact of said proof is utterly irrelevant. Either live your lives by certain guidelines or don't. It doesn't matter if there was some pot-smoking hippie… I mean, Jesus, speaking these words or if a gathering of greeting card writers broke da truf down for the masses. The new testament? Fiction.

How long did people believe in the veracity of the “shroud of Turin” again?

Nursing shortage a crisis in US hospitals

Gee, I can't imagine why no one wants an icky, unglamorous, underpaid job where you are in constant contact with coworkers (docs) who generally consider you inferior. Mmmm… bedpans.
