Microsoft loses city of Munich deal to Linux

The Forbes article on the Munich switch to F/OSS. According to Forbes, “Steve Ballmer had personally campaigned for Microsoft's counter-offer to the city, based on Windows XP.”

This is a big, big loss for MS. Losing to Linux in developing countries is one thing. Losing in Western Europe is a portent.

Microsoft down and out in Munich

Munich, the tech capital of Germany, switches 14,000 desktops from the doze to Linux. Sweet.

Matrix sequel pirated online

So, let me get this straight… they're trying to blame fuckin BitTorrent? BitTorrent?! Hahahahah. Man, that's funny. Blame a headless, serverless technology rather than the actual bad apples. Typical 21st century horseshit anti-technology litigation.

Windows Users Knocked Off Net

600,000 lemmings get their iNet connections waxed after installing the latest MSFT XP update. It was probably the DRM getting in the way of the TCP packets.

Justices Say Workers Can Sue States Over Right to Family Leave

Justices Say Workers Can Sue States Over Right to Family Leave

Very interesting. 6-3 decision in favor of federalism (over state's rights). Rehnquist, of all people, came down on the side of Due Process rather than Interstate Commerce in the interpretation. Dissenters: Kennedy, Scalia, Scalia's lapdog.

here's a link to the decision, concurrences, and dissents

Note: this isn't a decision on the case based on the merits, but rather is a decision about whether or not states can be sued under the FMLA (they can, under section 5 of the 14th amendment). Whether or not Hibbs wins has yet to be decided.

Wash. bans 'violent' game sales

This is a co-Grrr. As I reported a while back, our illustrious state legislators have just made certain videogames illegal for minors.

What a bunch of shitheels, and the governor is a clueless, cowardly, wood-block boring cracker ass cracker too.

If this isn't prohibition based on content (and thus a per se First Amendment violation) then I don't know what is.

Looks like I get to make those 'I buy games for minors' shirts after all.

GPL Legal Battle Coming?

OpenTV is sullying the commons. I think it's about time the GPL had its day in court so these freeloading assmunches get what's coming to them.

Microsoft Licenses Unix From SCO

Microsoft Licenses Unix From SCO

Adds fuel to the SCO-is-a-puppet-of-MSFT fire. For those that don't know, SCO's entire remaining business practice is to sue Linux companies for patent infringement. SCO loses every time, but that doesn't seem to stop them… which makes the puppet theory far more compelling than it would otherwise be. I'm not saying it's true or right, but I understand.

Why You Should Switch to the Mozilla Firebird browser

Why You Should Switch to the Mozilla Firebird browser

If you're not already using Mozilla, or even if you are, here is a summary of why you should switch to Firebird. I use both Mozilla and Firebird with pleasure; they're really nice browsers. Opera too, but it's not enough of a value-add to get me off the Mozilla train.

I'm not even looking at it anymore unless it offers tabbed browsing and mouse gestures.
