Norhtec: MicroServer GP / GP+

Awesome! It's a full linux server with no moving parts… and it's the size of a paperback. If it's fast enough (or gets firewire) to run a 24/192 sound system and Ardour… I'm all over that.

Drexler writes Smalley open letter on assemblers

Drexler writes to a naysayer refuting the small fingers and sticky fingers “problems.” Apparently, the small and sticky fingers aren't problems at all – they don't exist. Just goes to show how well the anti-nano FUD spread. Or how dumb I was to believe it. The dangers from nanotech remain, but so do the benefits… full steam ahead!

SCO smear campaign can't defeat GNU community

Uh oh. RMS is onto SCO now. They're probably quaking in their MS-funded, we-lost-the-linux-distro-war…we-must-sue! boots.

Former Microsoft worker allegedly stole $17 million in software, resold it

Wow, that's a lot of copies of Encarta right there. The other guy who did this (only a measley $9MM, mind) committed suicide by drinking antifreeze. Hope that's not as contagious as the grift.

GNU/Linux bootable CD on XBOX: dyne:bolic

Almost to 1.0 version. When that hits, I'll finally have a reason to get an XboX. Mmm… cheap servers that cost MS $100 per. Sweet.

Mom Meets Linux – A Lindows 4.0 Review

Mom Meets Linux – A Lindows 4.0 Review

The easier Linux gets, the better. I'm glad people are focusing on this area (UI consistency (a good/bad thing), printing, fonts, and the help system need the most grunt work right now). Lindows is probably making a profit. Smart move linking with Wal-mart, there, and gets Linux used in America's version of developing countries – the poor.

I do, however, have serious reservations about the subscription system (50 per year or 5 per month) that, much like credit card interest, can have a serious negative impact on low income households. The users can be free if they choose to (that is, by switching to another distro or, since Lindows is based on Debian, opening a shell window and running apt), but the subscription charges smack of hidden fees and taking advantage of people who don't know any better. I can see the business justification (they are, after all, providing a quite nice, friendly service), but if Linux is going to cost as much as XP Home in 4 years (50 purchase, 60 monthly fees for 3 years (first year is free), assuming no add-ons purchased)… uh, some of the joy is lost. Not much of a rant, but you gotta take what you can get.

Apple's Real Worry Isn't the Loss of IE

Whoah. Apple's now in third place on the desktop? Linux, formerly known as the “failure on the desktop”-Linux, is in second place behind Windows.

Wow, that was a lot sooner than I had expected.

Can Bush Be Both Ignorant and a Liar?

Yes. There's no reason for Bush-bashers to choose between the two.

Did MS, AOL, Yahoo block vote on California antispam bill?

Did MS, AOL, Yahoo block vote on California antispam bill?

MS is taking their public misdirection and misinformation cues from the white house. Same day that MS files suit against spammers in WA state, they testify against an anti-spam bill in CA. The Register covered this a while back, but really, it looks more like the big portals don't want any spam allowed… except theirs.

Tech giants ally on home networking

Beware, netizens. This is merely a DRM-Hollywood-RIAA ploy in disguise. Why do we need a standard for “MP3 playback” if we've already got TCP/IP and 802.11x? The devices can already transfer files. The devices can already read them. No, the only reason for this is to support some fair-use killing DRM wannabe innovation stiflers. Signees include, but are not limited to, Intel (leader), MS, and Sony.

Yanks' decision to postpone game backed by MLB

The Yank's “rainout” is a load of horseshit, specifically designed to avoid having to pitch Weaver against the Mets. They've been doing such acts for years and should have to forfeit the game against the Devil Rays. I'm not kidding about this. Just when you think they're not such mega-assholes, the Yanks go and pull another bonehead stunt like this. MLB can go stuff themselves. Running pigdog lackeys!

RootsWeb's Soundex Converter

Soundex is an old system of classifying people by homophones. Used in the 1880-1920s censii … and now the airlines are trying to use it for the terrorism watch list. Which is retarded. But finding your Soundex code is pretty fun, so I thought I'd link it.

Developing World Needs Linux

Yes, they do. And they're using it despite (or along with) “giveaways” by MSFT. They're also using the threat of Linux to get giveaways from MS. Anything that boosts their productivity without costing much, or anything, is good. Long-term, you can't be free.
