For an Iraqi Family, 'No Other Choice'

For an Iraqi Family, 'No Other Choice'

Now that's some crazy shit. Village to resident: kill your son or we kill you and your entire family. Abraham comes to mind, except there it was a god extorting someone into infanticide.

I guess it really does take a village.

Poindexter to Leave Pentagon Research Job

Not only was this assmunch the person behind the futures market, this convicted felon was also the "brain" behind TIA.

Actually, I like the idea of a terrorism futures market. It sounds like it could be fun to play. Like HSX.

Vatican Exhorts Legislators to Reject Same-Sex Unions

Because in this time of pandemics, war, famine, and need, the one thing that should be concerning Catholics (led by (supposed-to-be) celibate men) is to make sure that same-sex marriages are not recognized.

And to think that people wonder why Sinead ripped up a picture of the pope.

Pentagon Prepares a Futures Market on Terror Attacks

"The Pentagon office that proposed spying electronically on Americans to monitor potential terrorists has a new experiment. It is an online futures trading market, disclosed today by critics, in which anonymous speculators would bet on forecasting terrorist attacks, assassinations and coups."

Seriously… wtf?

Iraq Flap Shakes Rice's Image

Iraq Flap Shakes Rice's Image

She's more stupid and lazy than evil, but what're you going to do? A National Security Advisor with no credentials in the area who doesn't read intel reports, not even the ones that are priority number one and provide the basis for your arguments for war, someone who would rather spend time doing spin control and spreading misinformation on major media outlets than analyze data on foreign powers… yeah, that's someone doing a good job.

It's not so much that she's incompetent (although she is), it's more that she's an ideologue so convinced of the rightness of her pre-judged conclusions that any evidence presented need not be read… because she just knows it will support the conclusion.

Of course, an alternate explanation is that she does read these intel reports and does know what's going on… but chooses to lie about it. That's far more evil, and criminal, so she's better off with the incompetence argument.

China, AMD team on Opteron supercomputer

Let the century of Chinese-Indian struggle for hegemony begin! Round one goes to China, but much of their software was written by Indians so they'd better watch out.

Subpoenas Sent to File-Sharers Prompt Anger and Remorse

In case anyone was wondering whether or not this is an actual defense of copyrights or a bogeyman scare:

"The notion of paying up to $150,000 for each of the eight songs that the recording industry listed on the subpoena ? not to mention lawyer fees of $200 an hour should the family decide to fight a lawsuit ? still boggles her mind. "Hopefully when they find out he's just a kid, they'll drop it," she said." (emphasis mine)

It's a bogeyman scare.

So, where are those letters to CEOs? The RIAA - we're stupid, but we like to scare poor people who can't defend themselves.

Gates Says SCO Case Will Harm Linux

Gates Says SCO Case Will Harm Linux

Well, yeah, he would say that, wouldn't he. And he's not saying that because MSFT is definitely not the money behind the SCO suit. Totally not-related.

What I get annoyed with is the utter lack of comprehension by the people of MS of what, exactly, Free/Open Source means. Hell, they even use BSD netcode in their networking software, so MS knows that not all licenses are GPL. It's probably willful and all part of the grand FUD scheme, but it's not all willful, particularly when the FUD and misinfo is being vomitted up from the depths of the Microsoft non-dev's bellies (yeah, I'm talking about Gates, Ballmer, Allchin, et. al.).

Case in point (from article): "[Gates:] Here you have a product without R&D controls, and it's not part of a cross-license," he said. "Given the high level of functionality, you'd think it would have patents."

Moron. Patents are antithetical to the Free and Open movement. Moreover, if there were patents, your sorry ass couldn't be benefitting from the code.

Gates is brushed with the "he's smart because he's rich brush." Frankly, I think he's of moderate intelligence but as mean as any street brawler in any Cannery Row you can find.

He's still going lose, but he'll try every dirty, underhanded trick possible before he goes down.

3 Iraqis Killed as G.I.'s Set Up Raid in Hunt for Hussein

"There is no God but God, and America is the enemy of God!"

uh, yeah. We're on-task, on-target, and definitely, positively, not stuck in a quagmire of a guerilla war. Especially not a religiously-fueled one. Nope. Not at all.

Four U.S. Soldiers Charged With Abuse

“The four military police from a Pennsylvania-based Army Reserve unit are accused of punching, kicking and breaking bones of prisoners at Camp Bucca, the largest U.S.-run POW camp in Iraq.”

If the alleged acts occurred, you just know it had to be egregious for a court marshall to take place. Of particular interest is that two of the accused are female (interesting because it's unexpected/unusual, that is). Two of 'em were in their mid-late 30s too, so they really shouldn't have a hormonal excuse.

'course, I still smell sacrificial lamb in the air. With vindaloo…

Which pretty much means that Armstrong's going to win his 5th consecutive tour, tying Indurain for the record.

That's one amazing athlete, right there. You go, Lance.
