US outrage over Wolfowitz jibe

"An influential Lebanese politician and leader of its Druze community triggered US outrage today when he expressed regret US Deputy Defence Secretary Paul Wolfowitz was unhurt in a Baghdad rocket attack.

"We hope the firing will be more precise and efficient (next time), so we get rid of this microbe and people like him in Washington who are spreading disorder in Arab lands, Iraq and Palestine,"

oh, it is ON now, motherfucker! Dems fighting words!

(Because the anger of the people of the Middle East is so illogical, of course)

The White House is Blocking Search Enginges from Iraq Directories

Even if it is stupidity and not malice, it is a violation of the public trust for a public entity to restrict searches on the content made available on it's public web site.

And here? They just look cowardly.

Bush: Iraq Attacks Signs of Desperation

Right. Because increases in both the frequency and severity of attacks on US forces has got to be a sign of desperation, and obviously not a sign of increasing resistance and anger to our occupation.

Who would've thought that Vietnam could happen in the desert?

Foreign fighters blamed for day of carnage

"Arrest of would-be bomber with Syrian passport strengthens US belief that outside insurgents are behind wave of violence."

I sure am glad we started this unnecessary war in the Middle East, aren't you?

Search in Iraq Fails to Find Nuclear Threat

"According to records made available to The Washington Post and interviews with arms investigators from the United States, Britain and Australia, it did not require a comprehensive survey to find the central assertions of the Bush administration's prewar nuclear case to be insubstantial or untrue. Although Hussein did not relinquish his nuclear ambitions or technical records, investigators said, it is now clear he had no active program to build a weapon, produce its key materials or obtain the technology he needed for either."

yeah, no shit? Because we, the People, hadn't totally guessed that.

Why Are We Back in Vietnam?

Why Are We Back in Vietnam?

It's a good article detailing the failures of the Fourth Estate and the machinations of the administration to keep the truth from we, the People. The grrr is for the subject matter, not the piece itself.

Has there been an administration more afraid of the truth? One that goes to such great lengths to hide any embarassing little details from we, the People? The closest I can think of are the LBJ and Nixon administrations, neither of which reflect well on what we've got in DC right now.

Vigilante Justice, Detroit Style

"Police say a man in his 20s went on a rampage along Plymouth Road on Detroit's west side, attacking several women with a pipe…

Powell told Local 4 that a gray-color Grand Prix pulled up, and the persons inside the car fired five shots at the alleged attacker. Powell said the man then ran into an alley, where he was chased down and run over by the Grand Prix. The people inside the car then shot the man and left him behind, lying on the ground".

US helicopter shot down in Iraq

Damn, we've screwed this one up. There's still time to make things right, but the probability of an even marginally positive outcome (from an America-as-a-country perspective) is diminishing.

Florida Marlins 2, NY Yankees 0

Florida Marlins 2, NY Yankees 0

The Will of Pudge cannot be denied. Say hello to your 2003 World Champions.

I was torn in this series; the fish have a homunculus performing as a sycophant for an owner while the yanks are the yanks. Both teams have managers who recognize that the playoffs have different rules than the regular season and manage accordingly.

But then, the yanks are the yanks. So, woohoo!

I was totally against starting Josh Beckett (and Pavano, if it came to it) on 3 days rest; the historical performance of pitchers on 3 days rest is not good (to say the list). Well, so much for that. Beckett is a fuckin stud – 9IP, 5H, 9K. … and he's only 23 years old. If he and Prior stay healthy, we have another 10-15 years of some superawesome pitching.

Imagine what could've been if McKeon had been allowed to manage more. How awesome is it that a 72 year old is the most inventive, effective manager in the bigs?

Other interesting factoids: the Marlins have never lost a postseason series; the Marlins have won 2 World Series titles and yet have never won their division. Go figure.

So, congrats, fish. And if you accidentally kick loria in the shins during your celebration, I won't mind one bit.

Bush Accused by Lords of the Bar

Bush Accused by Lords of the Bar

An impressive collection federal judges, government officials, and other members of the legal establishment filed an amicus for the Padilla ("dirty bomber") v. Rumsfeld appeal. Remember the dirty bomber? Oh, yeah…

"This case involves an unprecedented detention by the United States of an American citizen, seized on American soil, and held incommunicado for more than a year without any charge being filed against him, without any access to counsel, and without any right to challenge the basis of his detention before a United States judge or magistrate . . .

"[We] believe the Executive's position in this case threatens the basic 'rule of law' on which our country is founded, the role of the federal judiciary and the separations in our national government, and fundamental individual liberties enshrined in our Constitution."

Administration Faces Supoenas From 9/11 Panel

"The chairman of the federal commission investigating the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks said that the White House was continuing to withhold several highly classified intelligence documents from the panel and that he was prepared to subpoena the documents if they were not turned over within weeks."

What are you talking about?! This administration is all about finding out what really happened. Really! No, really! They wouldn't obfuscate, delay, or deny truth and justice! No, really really!

Charity says $4bn 'missing' in Iraq

Charity says $4bn 'missing' in Iraq

“A British charity has accused the US-controlled Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) in Iraq of failing to account for $4bn meant to help rebuild the country.

The report's authors calculated that the CPA had received at least $5bn in oil revenues and assets seized from Saddam Hussein's government.

However, only $1bn of this could be traced, while the rest had simply vanished into a “financial black hole”, said the report.”

… hmm. Interesting
