Filibuster push is on

January 28th, 2006 No comments

And apparently, my state needs some more pushing.

Just got off a conference call with Ted Kennedy and others, and we got a better idea where the Dems are on all of this.

Some notes:

Maria Cantwell is reportedly quite wobbly, and might be succeptible to pressure. If Cantwell falls, Murray will potentially fall too.

Levin, Harkin, Bayh, Lautenberg, Lincoln, Pryor and Lieberman (who has not in fact committed) all need pressure. As do Baucus and Menendez.

Cantwell’s a big business republican at heart, so her “wobbliness” is of the Liebrerman sort. However if she or Murray believe they can get away with not voting no for cloture, then they’ve got another think coming. I promise you, if they do not vote no on cloture, then I will do everything in my power to unseat both of them for every election in every jurisdiction they may be in for the rest of my life.

So call them. Here’s the phone database link again.
Cantwell: (202) 224-3441
Murray: (202) 224-2621

Adventures in okonomiyaki

January 28th, 2006 No comments

Well, ghostfinger and I finally had our first okonomiyaki tonight, annnnnd…. yuck. I didn’t like the egg-dashi-flour-mushroom pancake part, at least not topped with roe.

The shrip sushi, the sukiyaki, and the bento were kickass, though. Daimoji gets a big thumbs up.

Next task: find somewhere in Washington that serves scallion pancakes. I found the cold sesame noodles finally, but the scallion pancakes are nowhere to be found.

Two Minute Hate page started

January 27th, 2006 No comments

I get tired of having to find examples of the right wing hate speech that gets spewed nearly every day by major mediots who have the support of national news networks, so I thought I’d create a page for tracking such things. A database would be better, but I don’t feel like going to all that effort. Feel free to add ‘em as you see ‘em.

Feinstein has come around on scAlito

January 27th, 2006 1 comment

She will now vote no on cloture, i.e. support a filibuster. Good job, peoples, helping her see the light of day.

U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) today announced that she will vote no on cloture regarding the nomination of Judge Samuel A. Alito, Jr. to be an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court.

“Based on a very long and thoughtful analysis of the record and transcript, which I tried to indicate in my floor statement yesterday, I’ve decided that I will vote no on cloture.”

Now we have to work on Ken Salazar and see if we can flip Olympia Snowe.

Gay rights bill passes in Legislature

The Senate today voted 25-23 to approve a gay rights bill and ended the debate over legislation that emerged in Washington the same year singer Anita Bryant began her “Save Our Children” crusade against such protections.

The House quickly concurred by a 61-37 vote, and Gov. Chris Gregoire said she planned to sign the bill into law Tuesday.

Bush and Jackoff coverup in full swing

January 27th, 2006 1 comment

They’re destroying photographic evidence. Too bad Jackoff has a bunch and is willing to sell, huh.

In his press conference today, President Bush suggested that the existence of photographs of himself and Jack Abramoff are no big deal and generally pooh-poohed the press’s focus on the story. But our reporting suggests that the White House is actively involved in covering up and possibly destroying photographic evidence of the two men together.

Earlier this month, we were alerted to the existence of a series Abramoff photos at the website of Reflections Photography, a studio that does photo shoots for many Republican political events and sells copies to the individuals who attended the events and other members of the public through an online photo database. Reflections was an official photographer for Bush-Cheney 2004 campaign events and for the 2005 inauguration.

One of those photos was of Abramoff and Ralph Reed at a party for the launch of Reed’s Century Strategies DC office in 2003. We contacted Reflections Photography and purchased the rights to publish that photograph and did so on January 11th.

Things weren’t so simple with the late 2003 photograph of Jack Abramoff and President Bush.

Major earthquake hits off Indonesian coast

A magnitude-7.7 undersea earthquake rocked eastern Indonesia early Saturday, the U.S. Geological Survey said. There was no danger of a tsunami.

The earthquake occurred in the Banda Sea about 120 miles south of Ambon city, the USGS said. It occurred at a depth of 212 miles.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said no destructive tsunami threat existed.

I don’t remember, was it that they don’t cane homosexuals hard enough or was it the ceding of land for peace? So hard to keep a pulse on Patria Pat’s whims.

Is it Democracy if Bush doesn’t get what he wants?

January 27th, 2006 No comments

Does the Preznit ever really get tired of being proven wrong? Do the Republicans ever get embarressed about supporting Bush’s nation building theories, only to find out that the end result isn’t what was expected?

I wasn’t sure just how quickly Bush’s naive notion that democracy in the middle east would prevent terrorism and increase U.S. security would be proven false, but it didn’t really take too long for the Palenstinians to show him that things work differenlty in the real word, than in Bush’s Fantasyland. Excuse me for thinking Mr. Preznit, but how does democracy stamp out terrorism, when the terrorists get elected to run the government? oops!! You weren’t quite expecting that one, were you?

Fight the Alito nomination! Call your Senator today

January 26th, 2006 No comments

Not that I mean to pull a billmon or anything, it’s just a tad crazy at the moment. In the meantime:

Call your senators and urge them to fight the nomination of Sam Alito.

If the Dems don’t stop this nomination, the organization will not see another penny of my money. At least not until Darth Jeb or Princess McCain shows up on the horizon. I reserve the right to donate to individual candidates, but anyone not named Howard Dean involved with the party apparatus will be dead to me.

Update: Kerry has called for a filibuster. Call your Senators and tell them you support this. Cantwell’s office ((202) 224-3441) is either shut down or overloaded, Murray’s office ((202) 224-2621) still has people answering the phones.

The Dems have no margin for error on here, and 2 votes to uphold a filibuster could make all the difference in the world. This is it, people. This is the most important battle regarding our civil liberties probably for the next 40 years. Right here, right now. This is the tipping point. Do something.

Yes, yes he did. Hasselhoff does Hooked on a feeling.

I can’t decide whether the fur suit + snowboard or the livingston + native spear + pogo jumping thing is the best part about the video. I’m going to stick with “both” here, because Hasselhoff fuckin ROCKS and any mofo who says otherwise is going to get a boot upside the head.

Bush == Nixon

Just replace Nixon’s paranoia with Bush’s stupidity and they’re nearly identical.

When the President does it, that means that it is not illegal

RIP Chris Penn

January 25th, 2006 No comments

Good actor. He will be missed.

Actor Chris Penn, brother of Sean Penn, was found dead Tuesday at his condominium near the beach in Santa Monica, police said.

Police said they discovered the 40-year-old actor’s body around 4 p.m. Lt. Frank Fabrega said there were no obvious signs of foul play.

Salon did a nice piece on Penn a ways back. You may have to sign up for the day pass to read it, but it’s worth it.
