The GOP’s assault on privacy continues

Posted in Privacy by Chris at 17:15

In Minnesota this time.

A story by Minnesota Public Radio reveals a disturbing new way that a political party is secretly grabbing sensitive personal information about voters.

This week the Minnesota Republican Party is distributing a new CD about a proposed state marriage amendment. Along with flashy graphics, the CD asks people their views on controversial issues such as abortion, gun control, illegal immigration, and so on.

The problem – the CD sends your answers back to headquarters, filed by name, address, and political views. No mention of that in the terms of use. No privacy policy at all.

What happened to Sony in the DRM fiasco needs to happen to the Panoptic GOP.

It’s good to dream.

Score one for integrity

As multiple bands refused big money from Hummer.

The Thermals, a rambunctious rock band from Portland, Ore., were en route between gigs last year when they got a phone call from their label, Sub Pop. Hummer wanted to pay them $50,000 for the right to use their song “It’s Trivia” in a commercial.

Trans Am, an electronic rock band from Washington, spurned $180,000 in ad money from Hummer.

“We thought about it for about 15 seconds, maybe,” lead singer Hutch Harris said.

They said no.

Washington D.C.’s Trans Am were offered $180,000 by Hummer for the song “Total Information Awareness.”

“We figured it was almost like giving music to the Army, or Exxon,” guitarist Philip Manley said.

They said no.

The post-punk band LiLiPUT, who broke up more than 20 years ago, could have pocketed $50,000 for “Heidi’s Head” after making close to nothing during their five-year existence. But they, too, said no.

“At least I can sleep without nightmares,” Marlene Marder reasoned.

I’m sure their managers were livid. Do you know how hard it is to turn down that kind of money when you’re an indie band playing shitty bars in nowhere towns? I admire that kind of commitment to principle.

V for Vendetta

Posted in Movies by Chris at 11:12

Finally, a movie that I’m really looking forward to seeing. V for Vendetta is the perfect movie for these times - it’s my kind of aggressive civil libertarianism… revolution washed in the blood of the people fighting to free themselves from tyranny.

The people should not fear the government, the government should fear the people.

Alan Moore’s among my favorite writers, and this is his second best work (the first being Watchmen). Too bad it has Natalie “I can’t act” Portman in it, but otherwise, looks to be some good times. If you have the opportunity, I highly recommend the graphic novel upon which the movie is based.

Could Faux news possibly become any more Stalinistic?

Fox News featured two onscreen captions during a segment on escalating violence in Iraq that read: ” ‘Upside’ To Civil War?” and “All-Out Civil War in Iraq: Could It Be a Good Thing?”

Other upcoming segments:

  • Leg amputations: good for walking?
  • Ice pick in the eye: does improved ventilation to the brain increase intelligence?
  • The Holocaust: where to find those second home bargains!
  • Humor Friday: K-Fed edition

States permanently under CMo boycott: #1, South Dakota

Posted in Evil, Freedom, Grrr... by Chris at 18:08

Because the state now lays claim to property rights in women’s uteruses. Better keep those legs crossed, women!

Setting up South Dakota to become the first state in 14 years to start a direct legal attack on Roe v. Wade, lawmakers voted on Wednesday to outlaw nearly all abortions.

Across the country, abortion rights advocates reacted with outrage and dismay. The Planned Parenthood Federation of America, which runs the sole abortion clinic in South Dakota, said it was bracing to fight the move in court immediately, if the governor signs it.

“This represents a monumental step backward for personal privacy for women,” Nancy Keenan, president of Naral Pro-Choice America, said.

Some opponents of abortion rights celebrated what they called a bold and brave move and lauded South Dakota for taking the lead in what they said they hoped would become a series of states to challenge Roe, the 1973 decision that made abortion legal.

The shifting makeup of the United States Supreme Court, the opponents said, offered a crucial opportunity, the first since at least 1992.

“It is a calculated risk, to be sure, but I believe it is a fight worth fighting,” State Senator Brock L. Greenfield, a Clark Republican who is also director of the South Dakota Right to Life, told his colleagues in a hushed, packed chamber here.

After more than an hour of fierce and emotional debate, the senators rejected pleas to add exceptions for incest or rape or for the health of the pregnant woman and instead voted, 23 to 12, to outlaw all abortions, except those to save the woman’s life.

They also rejected an effort to allow South Dakotans to decide the question in a referendum and an effort to prevent state tax dollars from financing what is certain to be a long and expensive court battle.

    Emphasis added.

The women-as-chattel/anti-choice zealots sat on this little gambit until after scAlito was safely nominated. In case you didn’t think this was going to happen or you were one of the 20 chickenshit traitors who voted for cloture before a meaningless vote against scAlito on the senate floor (you cocksmoking fuckholes, you), well, here’s your proof. This is it. This was the reason to vote for Kerry. This was the reason to oppose Alito. This is the one trick the Wahabists have, the one thought they had in their tiny little minds. It’s not as if this should be a shock, except to the 20 traitorous fucktards who sold our civil liberties down the river because they’re too cowardly to actually act as an opposition party or too addicted to the cocktail shrimp circuit in DC. Sorry, tangent there.

This blatantly unconstitutional law is being pushed for the sole reason of hoping for a grant of cert by the Supreme Court, thereby leading to Roe v. Wade being overturned by the Scalia-Thomas-Roberts-scAlito axis of assholery.

That this law is upopular measure pushed by the increasingly anti-democratic American Taliban GOoPers is evidenced by the refusal to put it to a referendum. This, of course, is typical behavior for the “moral majority” minority. If you’re so strong in your convictions, bitches, why don’t you want the people to have their say? Why are you so afraid of opening up the principle to public debate?

The fight over abortion is not about the sanctity of life. It is not about “protecting the children,” or even protecting the zygote Americans (otherwise, where’s the anti-in-vitro fertilization law? Where’s the anti-normal uterine operation law?).

No, it is about controlling women and punishing them for having the audacity to have sex. Granted, with no carve-out for incest or rape, this heinous law is more correctly morally aligned with the “save the children” myth so as far as that goes, at least this law is more morally consistent and upfront about the motivations behind it than most (exceptions for rape or incest merely emphasize the punitive nature of the anti-choice zealots; they punish the “guilty” women for having sex while letting the “no-fault” women kill their zygote-Americans with impunity).

In addition to fundamentalist religious zealotry, much of this “debate” is pushed by scared, powerless men with tiny dicks. Like this guy who was a major force in getting this law passed:

tiny dick douchebag Brock L. Greenfield

This hung-like-a-peanut mama’s boy douchebag is going to make women pay for mocking his lack of externally visible genitalia. He’s going to make you all pay! (I’m also googlebombing douchebag to point to this douchebag. Feel free to do likewise)

I consider it a moral imperative not to support entities or activities which are repugnant to me. Thus, from this point forward, I will never vacation in South Dakota. I will never buy anything that I know comes from South Dakota. I will never support any public works in South Dakota. The only thing I will support is excising that welfare state from the Union.

I have a feeling my boycott list is going to be growing soon.

    Irony, where is thy sting?

Posted in Misc by Chris at 14:07

Isn’t it funny how, after 6 years of lies, murder, illegality, corruption, fraud, secrecy, incompetence, and the destruction of our democracy… the BushCo gets nailed for a business transaction that, optics aside, was mostly just a large-scale corporate buyout that we had no control over (with a little US-security-harming quid pro quo on the side)?

But hey, at least he never got a blowjob.

    Here’s a winner

Posted in Evil, Eye Rollers, Law by Chris at 21:09

If by “winner” you mean “misogynist deranged loon with a tiny penis,” that is. (link goes to a “marriage contract” he drew up)

I think he should try again. Only this time make it more like…

Do you want go out with me?
    [] Yes
    [] Yes

    Will you marry me?
    [] Yes
    [] Yes

Will you laugh at my tiny penis as I try to control every aspect of your life, including your shaving habits and undergarments?
    [] No
    [] No

Have you at any time wished you could have answered differently above?
    [] Yes
    [] No

Note: answering “Yes” above will result in your Good Wife privileges being revoked.

    A sign of the apocalypse

Scooter Libby Legal Defense Trust sets up a website. Nice money quote from Our Dear Adjunct Leader in the banner.

Gee, allllllll this for a minor perjory charge. You don’t think backers with more to hide are supporting the Libby stonewall-pre-pardon, do you? I mean, what would Cheney or any of those uber rich slime monkeys listed as part of the board have to hide? They’re totally above board in everything they do.

    Aaaand there goes Roe

Posted in Freedom, Grrr... by Chris at 11:35

    That didn’t take long

The Supreme Court said Tuesday it will consider the constitutionality of banning a type of late-term abortion, teeing up a contentious issue for a new-look court already in a state of flux over privacy rights.

The term “partial birth abortion” is a propagandistic phrase created by anti-choicers, by the way. That the NYT parrots it show just how well the refs have been worked. The proper term is “dilate and extract” and there is no birth involved.

Not that the phrase being used matters any longer, since the American Taliban is about to claim ownership rights in women’s uteruses nationwide.

Thanks, Ralph. Thanks Lieberman, Cantwell, and the rest of you Dem traitors. Thanks Blackwell. Thanks Harris. Thanks NARAL for not opposing scAlito. Thanks media. I detest each and every one of you.

    Worse than an Idiot….Dick Cheney

Posted in Misc by KeithS at 11:40

I came across a couple of quotes by Jim Brady this morning but loved one in particular. Mr. Brady, as you will recall, was Ronald Reagan’s Press Secretary and took a bullet in the head during the assassination attempt on Reagan in the spring of 1981. Brady and his wife have been gun control advocates ever since.

There were several zingers aimed at Dead-Eye Dick this week including this one by Jim Brady:

I had a friend once who accidentally shot pellets into his dog–and I thought he was an idiot.

    And you were right Jim.

People better watch what they say

Posted in Evil, Eye Rollers, Freedom, Grrr... by Chris at 21:04

    watch what they read

According to News.com.au, American punk rock icon and writer Henry Rollins was reported to the National Security hotline during his recent Australian tour because of a book he was reading on a flight to Brisbane.

A furious Rollins was informed he was “nominated as a possible threat” for reading “Jihad: The Rise of Militant Islam In Central Asia”, writes Kathy McCabe.

The incident happened on a flight from Auckland on the recent Big Day Out tour.

Rollins told Australian fans during his tour that he received a letter from a “nice woman” who worked “in one of those government areas that deals with anti-terrorism matters.”

He posted the letter on his web site.

“Please tell your Government and everyone in your office to go fuck themselves. Baghdad’s safer than my hometown and your PM is a sissy,” he wrote.
