What’s your traveller IQ?

Posted in Games, Misc by Chris at 16:37

(their widget sucks, so you’ll just have to go there by clicking)

I can go to 11. Best location was 13 8 4 3 km from the target (St. Petersburg) The map needs to be bigger (in terms of pixels), for sure.

Update: Finally made it to level 12 (traveler IQ of 130, 553,000 points). Hooray for me!

More Dealios - computer gaming

Posted in Deals, Games, Gifts by Chris at 14:53

Ghostfinger’s doing this project about violence and computer games, which got me thinking… man, I love games! And when I buy games, I go to GoGamer (all the way back to the day when it used to be called CompuExpert).

GoGamer.com... Where Gamers Go!

Being forced to use a laptop as my primary machine has really killed off a lot of my favorite games. Well, that and having all my free time sucked up elsewhere, that is. In any event, I recommend GoGamer highly if you’re in the market for some games.

… if I was shopping for myself, I’d get Neverwinter Nights 2

Neverwinter Nights 2 DVD

(since they’re apparently never going to freaking release Jade Empire). If you’ve got to play on a console, you can’t go wrong with a Madden Football (consoles are the only time football is acceptable)

Fear of Girls

Posted in Games, Humor, Movies by Chris at 15:21

Great mockumentary of a couple hard core role players. If you’ve been there, you know this is true. Good times.

Amazing what people can do for very little money these days, huh. Digital camera, some software… a tripod… a couple people from the acting workshop… a park bench…

Sudoku

Posted in Games, Pop Culture by Chris at 13:50

Wanna know what it is? Feel like getting addicted? Letting your analytical brain take over for a bit? Want to see what the big “craze” is all about? Well, here’s a free online sudoku site.

Summary: 9×9 grid, you use the numbers 1-9. There must be no duplicate numbers across rows or down columns (like rooks in chess). Every 3×3 section has to contain the numbers 1-9 within it. That’s it. Go!

Grand Theft Auto recall

Posted in Eye Rollers, Games, Grrr..., Pop Culture by Chris at 12:50

the Hot Coffee isn’s so hot, apparently.

How fucked up is it that we live in a society where you can play a game where you can kill as many people as you want in highly graphic ways and the game gets a “mature” rating. Yet the second that it’s discovered this game has a sex mini-game within it, it gets labeled as “adults only.”

America: what else do you expect from a country founded by puritans with guns?

Some life lessons

Posted in Games, Misc by Chris at 07:19

A lot of valuable life lessons can be learned from video games. For example, from the Sims I learned that the key to happiness is hiring a maid. From GTA, I learned that motorcycles are the best mode of transportation (though perhaps not as fun as the steal a plane and skydive-in mode). And from Pac-Man, I learned that if you eat certain pills, bad guys turn into blue ghosts that you can then eat.

Valuable lessons, one and all.

Grand Theft Auto

Posted in Games by Chris at 09:29

yeah yeah it’s a horrible, corrupting game and all that. Insanely fun but also insanely wrong.

But that’s not why I’m posting. No no no.

I’m posting because the best part about GTA is the audio work. Well, the soundtracks and the DJ scripts, anyway. They’re full of hilarious asides and commentaries (like the one who could’ve been in Boyz II Men, but he was too good looking … and the insane rock DJ). Good times. Anyway, I recognized two of the DJs (Chuck D on the hip-hop, George Clinton on the funk) so I looked up the rest. The old school r&b? Michael Bivens (from New Edition and Bell Biv Devoe). The crazy rock DJ? Axl Rose. Yep, Axl freakin Rose. Clinton’s the best (the funktopus, sticking the funk in your grill), but Axl’s pretty sweet too.

If you’ve ever played SimCity or the Sims, then you’ll totally get Penny Arcade’s presentation of Will Wright’s Pee.

Israeli Army frowns on D&D

Posted in Eye Rollers, Games by Chris at 15:28

No, really.

Ynetnews has learned that 18-year-olds who tell recruiters they play the popular fantasy game are automatically given low security clearance.

“They’re detached from reality and suscepitble to influence,” the army says.

Fans of the popular role-playing game had spoken of rumors of this strange policy by the IDF, but now the army has confirmed that it has a negative image of teens who play the game and labels them as problematic in regard to their draft status.

Microsoft includes fuck-pillow with Japanese Xbox

Microsoft includes fuck-pillow with Japanese Xbox

"This month marks the two-year anniversary of the launch of the Xbox video game system in Japan, and so far, things have not gone as planned for the Redmond, Washington-based software giant. In fact, Microsoft's entry hasn't yet sold 500,000 units, making it one of the worst-performing game consoles in the country's history.

Still, the Xbox has its supporters — and by and large, they're fans of the Dead or Alive games that feature a bevy of barely legal, high-resolution digital girls who fight in skimpy outfits and play volleyball in skimpier ones. The DOA games are the only two Xbox titles to break 100,000 units sold in Japan.

So, to celebrate the Japanese release of Dead or Alive Online next month, Microsoft is rolling out a special edition Xbox set with an extra-special bonus — a dakimakura, or "hugging pillow," that features a life-size, front-and-back print of teenage character Kasumi in a skimpy bikini. "

Apple + RIAA == DRM Asshats

Apple + RIAA == DRM Asshats

And here's a nice, populist response.

Apple should be ashamed of their ad. All of these DRM-focused, pro-large media corporations are taking we, the People's, common heritage away. F them.

MusicXML Definition v1.0 Released

Music data definition; an open standard holy grail. It's pretty sweet, actually. I hope everyone buys into it.
