Shuttle launch to go ahead despite risk of ‘catastrophe’
NASA managers have rejected last-ditch pleas from their top safety officer and chief engineer to scrap next month’s shuttle launch, saying that they will press ahead despite potentially catastrophic risks.
The head of the US space agency, Dr Michael Griffin, overruled warnings that there was a “relatively high” chance the shuttle’s external fuel tank could shed some of its solid foam coating when it launches on 1 July, carrying seven crew including Briton Piers Sellers, an Edinburgh University graduate.
But it gets better. Rove Griffin is going to carry on! Well, the soon to be dead astronauts are anyway. Money quote:
Dr Griffin said: “I do not see the situation we’re in as being a crew-loss situation. If we are unlucky and we have a debris event on ascent, it will not impede the ascent. The crew will arrive safely in orbit, and then we will begin to look at our options.”
Crew-loss == they all die
debris event == they all die on reentry
options once in orbit: 0
I don’t want these sociopaths to be able to add another 8 lives to their ledger. Politics is not worth sending a 25-year old deathtrap up into space.

… unmanned aerial reconnaissance vehicles.
Police launched the future of law enforcement into the smoggy Los Angeles sky in the form of a drone aircraft, bringing technology most commonly associated with combat zones to urban policing.
The unmanned aerial vehicle, which looks like a child’s remote control toy and weighs about five pounds (2.3 kilograms), is a prototype being tested by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Police say the drone, called the SkySeer, will be able to accomplish tasks too dangerous for officers and free up helicopters for other missions.
“This technology could be used to find missing children, search for lost hikers, or survey a fire zone,” said Commander Sid Heal, head of the Technology Exploration Project of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department
I’m sure that the realization the the drone can also be used to silently observe private individuals on non-public land (and public) never occurred to anybody. Nev-er. Because it’s about the children!
The existence and use of the drones is effectively no different than having a bunch of helicopters flying around - and cheaper too! - so you’ve got nothing to worry about. I mean what’s to worry about when you’ve got a mini-Predator roaming your skies? What? It’s not like UAV’s have been used to assassinate people before, like, ever, or that pushbutton video game violence dehumanizes the event and lowers the barriers to pushing the trigger or anything.
Yes, I realize it’s too small to carry a weapon… but it’s not too small to carry a laser designator. And if you’ve got spotters, why not have a full Predator around? You know, just in case. Just in case you spot the terrirrrists en flagrante terrrristo! In case Jack Bauer needs an assist. In case you see a Sikh running from a building and into a panel van?
FSM, I love technology! Woohoo! When I thought of the future, I thought of living in a police state under constant surveillance where the government pays no heed the laws as written in the books. Didn’t everyone?

A Pentagon probe into the death of Iraqi civilians last November in the Iraqi city of Haditha will show that U.S. Marines “killed innocent civilians in cold blood,” a U.S. lawmaker said Wednesday.
From the beginning, Iraqis in the town of Haditha said U.S. Marines deliberately killed 15 unarmed Iraqi civilians, including seven women and three children.
One young Iraqi girl said the Marines killed six members of her family, including her parents. “The Americans came into the room where my father was praying,” she said, “and shot him.”
On Wednesday, Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., said the accounts are true.
Military officials told NBC News that the Marine Corps’ own evidence appears to show Murtha is right.
I thought Abu Ghraib would be the My Lai of Iraq. Turns out, it’s probably more along the lines of the mining of Haiphong or bombing Cambodia. I don’t know if there was a Tet offensive that shattered public opinion against the war (we seem to have dripped over the line rather than jumped). Turns out, I didn’t need to search for a metaphorical My Lai in Iraq because we had a direct replication. The hooded-on-a-box guy will be the image that remains, like the screaming naked Vietnamese girl running from the napalm.
“This one is ugly,” one official told NBC News.
Ugly? No. Abominable. Inhuman. Unforgiveable. Executing a woman who is leaning over in prayer is not ugly, it is depraved. It may be a symptom of people stretched past their breaking point, given impossible tasks in impossible conditions, and I hold everyone from the soldiers who did it up to the C-in-C responsible. These soldiers, unlike the loser rabble that went on a rampage at My Lai, were considered the best of the best. Hand picked volunteers. And they snapped.
I’m sure the 101st Fighting Keyboarders will accentuate the “rogue unit” angle and the small number of executed. Even so, they will be accepting the un
exceptional nature of the United States (it’s a paradox for their worldview, and I predict they will ignore it rather than go insane trying to reconcile our unexceptional exceptionalism). In any event, this is a war crime. Something you see in Darfur or Serbia or … Iraq.

Bond market goes boom. Say hello to an increase in the fizzle of the housing market (and related industries) and an exploding number of bankruptcies as people’s ARMs skyrocket. Like, oh, mine, for example. Also, we, the People’s cost for our debt servicing by this insane administration just got a whole lot worse. Oh yeah, and credit card rates will go up as well.
Combine this with the $100/barrel oil ($200 or more if we attack Iran) and let’s just say Chicken Little was an optimist.

Sy Hersh continues with his great reporting. US considers use of nuclear weapons against Iran
The administration of President George W. Bush is planning a massive bombing campaign against Iran, including use of bunker-buster nuclear bombs to destroy a key Iranian suspected nuclear weapons facility, The New Yorker magazine has reported in its April 17 issue.
The article by investigative journalist Seymour Hersh said that Bush and others in the White House have come to view Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as a potential Adolf Hitler.
This makes the bushevik propaganda’s, what, #4 neo Hitler? The fact of the matter is that we are run by a bloodthirsty chickenhawk junta, drunk on mad visions of glory.
If we use nuclear weapons in yet another illegal war of aggression, make no mistake about it - it will only be a matter of time before New York City becomes an ash-filled charnel house.
If it’s any consolation, Hersh also reports that many of the Joint Chiefs and the planning staff will resign if the Rumsfeld-Bush-Cheney band of megalomaniacal messianic fucktards goes forward with this plan.

Hunter-killer drones and remote CIA assassinations coming to a town near you
Unmanned aerial vehicles have soared the skies of Afghanistan and Iraq for years, spotting enemy encampments, protecting military bases, and even launching missile attacks against suspected terrorists.
Now UAVs may be landing in the United States.
A House of Representatives panel on Wednesday heard testimony from police agencies that envision using UAVs for everything from border security to domestic surveillance high above American cities. Private companies also hope to use UAVs for tasks such as aerial photography and pipeline monitoring.
Click for photos“We need additional technology to supplement manned aircraft surveillance and current ground assets to ensure more effective monitoring of United States territory,” Michael Kostelnik, assistant commissioner at Homeland Security’s Customs and Border Protection Bureau, told the House Transportation subcommittee.
This is Hoover’s America, not mine.

Oh, the joys of marital bliss
A Mexican couple were recovering separately after a marital spat got out of control and saw them firing guns, throwing knives and hurling homemade bombs, Mexican daily Milenio said on Monday.
…
Juan Espinosa and Irma Contreras fought until their house blew up in a homemade gasoline bomb explosion, Milenio said.
…
Espinosa told reporters he was glad his wife had suffered burns, while Contreras said she was only sorry she had not “hacked off his manhood” during the fight.

Guess I’ll have to keep looking.
This is isn’t a joke or a parody commercial. It’s just insane. Robinson is running for Congress in North Carolina and he uses the Twilight Zone theme to attack gays, judges, African Americans and just about anything or anyone else you can think of.
Tragically, there’s no “No one expects the Spanish Inquisition!” moment.

Just when you think you live in a democracy, you see shit like the guy Dick shot apologizing to Cheney for putting his face in the way of Cheney’s shotgun pellets. And having a heart attack. And not taking out his dentures when he fellated the vice King.

I think we’ve got a new standard bearer for the picture next to “sycophant” in the dictionary.

BLAM!
I see that Dick Cheney is as good of a shot as he is with truthiness and not eating the brains of the living:
Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shot and wounded a companion during a weekend quail hunting trip in Texas, spraying the fellow hunter in the face and chest with shotgun pellets.
Nice shot, Dick. Apparently, he’s only accurate with cudgels, nipple clamps, and electrodes.
Dick did not kill the other guy… unlike Laura Bush, who killed a classmate. Duhbya only kills via proxy, as we bang our heads against the wall from his stupidity. Any real action, and Duhbya pisses his pants.

Henhouse, fox. Yessirree… The Bug Man is now in charge of our government’s finances.
Indicted Rep. Tom DeLay, forced to step down as the No. 2 Republican in the House, scored a soft landing Wednesday as GOP leaders rewarded him with a coveted seat on the Appropriations Committee.
DeLay, R-Texas, also claimed a seat on the subcommittee overseeing the Justice Department, which is currently investigating an influence-peddling scandal involving disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff and his dealings with lawmakers. The subcommittee also has responsibility over NASA — a top priority for DeLay, since the Johnson Space Center is located in his Houston-area district.
“Allowing Tom DeLay to sit on a committee in charge of giving out money is like putting Michael Brown back in charge of FEMA — Republicans in Congress just can’t seem to resist standing by their man,” said Bill Burton, spokesman for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
I’d laugh if it this weren’t so painful. DeLay? Appropriations? Are you high? No? You’re not? Well, I’m going to be soon, baby!

Why, if it were occurring, there would be measurable increases in average temperatures among other evidence.
As you can see by the picture below, even though temperatures across the country are historically high over the past month, there is definitely, positively, no evidence of global climactic change.

Jill Carroll, in case you haven’t been following the story, was a reporter in Iraq. She was kidnapped not long ago (and her interpreter was killed), with the kidnappers demanding that the US release Iraqi women in exchange for Ms. Carroll. This seemed bizarre on its face, but, hey, who knows what lurks in the mind of these kidnappers, huh?
Well, it turns out, that there is more to the story. You see, the reason why Ms. Carroll was kidnapped and why they asked for the release of women in US custody is because we have been kidnapping suspected guerilla leaders’ wives when we cannot get to the man.
U.S. forces in Iraq, in two instances described in military documents, took custody of the wives of men believed to be insurgents in an apparent attempt to pressure the suspects into giving themselves up.
Both incidents occurred in 2004. In one, members of a shadowy military task force seized a mother who had three young children, still nursing the youngest, “in order to leverage” her husband’s surrender, according to an account by a civilian Defense Intelligence Agency intelligence officer.
In the other, an e-mail exchange includes a U.S. military officer asking “have you tacked a note on the door and challenged him to come get his wife?”
The documents were among thousands obtained by the American Civil Liberties Union from the government under court order through the Freedom of Information Act.
…
t described the actions of Task Force 6-26, which has been mentioned in other documents in connection with allegations of detainee abuse, and stated that on May 9, 2004, task force personnel detained the wife of “a suspected terrorist” in Tarmiya, Iraq.“The 28-year-old woman had three young children at the house, one being as young as six months and still nursing. Her husband was the primary target of the raid, with other suspect personnel subject to detainment as well,” the memo stated.
“During the pre-operational brief, it was recommended by TF (task force) personnel that if the wife were present, she be detained and held in order to leverage the primary target’s surrender,” the memo stated. Its author said that “I objected to the detainment of the young mother to the raid team leader” and “I believed it was a dead issue.”
This is abominable on many levels. This also happens to be a violation of the Geneva conventions, Article 34.
Art. 34. The taking of hostages is prohibited.
I am really tired of living in a country run by an administration that does not respect the rule of law or anything other than their own twisted, narcissistic fantasies. That we are violating the Geneva conventions (again), is the direct result of an illegal, illegitimate, preemptive war and for which the miserable failure bears full responsibility.
Impeach George Bush. Impeach him now.
Update: on the day that scAlito’s nomination was just sent to the floor, I thouhgt I’d give a taste of the kind of discourse we are going to have when the American Taliban takes over.
Why should she be upset — She’s among friends…
I have NO sympathy for her — sorry

I’m sorry, but for some reason I’m not convinced she’s not faking it.
I’ve seen both videos. In the first, I did not see any fear in her eyes.
In the second, she seemed to me to be acting.
I base all this in the context of having watched other hostage videos and saw plenty of fear in the eyes of the captives.

The radical Ialamic mouthpiece, Aljazera, did not air the audio from this tape or from her previous tape. I have a strong feeling that her tears were not for herself. She just does not seem like the type of person who would have this type of fear for herself. I think she is crying in empathy from a different sort of threat.
I would love to see a lip reader’s transcript of her tapes.

Regardless of her political inclinations, were the Islamofascists to execute her, it would confirm the need to invade their countries and kill their leaders - lets not make the same mistake we made in the 20’s and 30’s.

A nation that creates youths who beat and kill homeless people for sport?
Family members and their attorneys negotiated the surrender of Brian Hooks, 18, and a 17-year-old friend, both of whom had fled the state. (It is the policy of MSNBC.com not to identify juvenile suspects.)
Both will be charged with the murder of Norris Gaynor and aggravated battery for the beating of Jacques Pierre…
“It’s one of the shameful secrets we have, the beating of homeless for sport,” said Marti Forman, CEO of the Cooperative Feeding Program, told the newspaper. “It’s a recreation thing, it’s an initiation for gangs and fraternities.”
This is one of the stories that makes me pray for the dino-killer asteroid to hit our planet and wipe us out. Or at least depraved psychopaths and all fraternities. That would be a swell asteroid, that would.
